See the sketches <a href="http://beautiful-beasts.blogspot.com">here.</a> We are focusing on a small community wood which is really a little nature reserve and I have decide to make a set of work about things that “sing” in some way. </p> <p>Grasshoppers and crickets are another wonderful sound of a UK summer, along with the bees, so they are one of the subjects I will be working on.<br>I am not sure I can really call this a grasshopper its a bit of a hybrid mix and I have taken quite a bit of artistic license with it, but it’s fine for some more experiments and does have some of the essence of the sketches and grasshoppery-ness about it. I have been reading about the difference between crickets and grasshoppers and, as usual, it all becomes more and more fascinating the more you find out. </p> <p><a href="http://lh3.ggpht.com/-6ZMqSkVSpA0/VM5OeKfwi-I/AAAAAAAAToQ/FuqcoFG4sXU/s1600-h/IMG_52773.jpg"><img title="IMG_5277" style="border-left-width: 0px; border-right-width: 0px; border-bottom-width: 0px; display: inline; border-top-width: 0px" border="0" alt="IMG_5277" src="http://lh4.ggpht.com/-HSdWBXWmWlQ/VM5Oe5wOt0I/AAAAAAAAToU/GYD7Mm9dL2M/IMG_5277_thumb1.jpg?imgmax=800" width="404" height="304"></a> </p> <p>Drawing, block and first proof…</p> <p> <a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhitiFjc5BZpvJj5t0fDcg3Dj3k-DMYbGjQeu5ccXuXhrgWkwqThO-7dJnqXvzAZ3ph0kdtGj4rxd0aUkm3pNlCTMiwws61nn4LO1gOtG2xAqbUkn64ns62PqbGNTX6sCW-LxNF0NZRD9OQ/s1600-h/firstproof3.gif"><img title="first-proof" style="border-left-width: 0px; border-right-width: 0px; border-bottom-width: 0px; display: inline; border-top-width: 0px" border="0" alt="first-proof" src="http://lh5.ggpht.com/-vcaOeheMjGw/VM5Of09jw-I/AAAAAAAAToo/-Sdjj23JOmM/firstproof_thumb1.gif?imgmax=800" width="404" height="281"></a> </p> <p>I have quite a few more prints and drawings and ideas for this little chap in progress so more soon. </p> sharp green pencilhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/03995814359038535193noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2058743330376740875.post-20358301035381781302015-01-24T08:54:00.001-08:002015-01-24T08:54:00.736-08:00A Small Frog “book”.<p>In order to try some book forms I have been using some old prints. It’s not really a book but a folded print contained in two stuff covers. </p> <p>It amazes me how much can go wrong with such a simple exercise. Very accurate measuring and cutting is essential but without a proper guillotine its tricky but I am improving. The covers are simple thin card covered with an old frog print with a few additions </p> <p> <a href="http://lh6.ggpht.com/-oKM-pPlE5XE/VMPOEs4kKAI/AAAAAAAATdY/PfwBkWP0Tuc/s1600-h/cover%25255B3%25255D.jpg"><img title="cover" style="border-top: 0px; border-right: 0px; border-bottom: 0px; border-left: 0px; display: inline" border="0" alt="cover" src="http://lh4.ggpht.com/-Ld78odJCZ3U/VMPOFezvxSI/AAAAAAAATdc/vkSvIAVdnZE/cover_thumb%25255B1%25255D.jpg?imgmax=800" width="254" height="310"></a></p> <p>Cover</p> <p><a href="http://lh5.ggpht.com/-KCYDPtkkzM8/VMPOF7EK_II/AAAAAAAATdo/zwBIBykzZ2g/s1600-h/frog%252520booklet%2525201%25255B3%25255D.jpg"><img title="frog booklet 1" style="border-top: 0px; border-right: 0px; border-bottom: 0px; border-left: 0px; display: inline" border="0" alt="frog booklet 1" src="http://lh4.ggpht.com/-xRg6FY1oTQY/VMPOGW-Dx4I/AAAAAAAATdw/yhyTWuOVRSk/frog%252520booklet%2525201_thumb%25255B1%25255D.jpg?imgmax=800" width="254" height="353"></a> </p> <p>It does stand up.</p> <p><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiPGJ_FdldLNdMeODpRJuLSkHXxisw8a-lVkh64aglE0R2uBF8YWbc8KWNphgxS73EPNVGuQZX8uCBMr3IlM4EtYTXDgiJVHdrMV2jUyuVUI5BYpLyxS1dVv-sezpfRzr1DlcnVlTBwXyv1/s1600-h/back%252520and%252520front%25255B4%25255D.jpg"><img title="back and front" style="border-top: 0px; border-right: 0px; border-bottom: 0px; border-left: 0px; display: inline" border="0" alt="back and front" src="http://lh5.ggpht.com/-w_v2pQV6HU0/VMPOHQjEp5I/AAAAAAAATeA/6Cxl4ztWyz4/back%252520and%252520front_thumb%25255B2%25255D.jpg?imgmax=800" width="304" height="272"></a> </p> <p>Front and back </p> <p><a href="http://lh3.ggpht.com/--hCDcYBZsUs/VMPOIN3XVmI/AAAAAAAATeI/z25gGg9U_5A/s1600-h/front%252520and%252520back%25255B4%25255D.jpg"><img title="front and back" style="border-top: 0px; border-right: 0px; border-bottom: 0px; border-left: 0px; display: inline" border="0" alt="front and back" src="http://lh5.ggpht.com/-t0CSsTXt56E/VMPOIrAPxTI/AAAAAAAATeM/M7okPtcly14/front%252520and%252520back_thumb%25255B2%25255D.jpg?imgmax=800" width="304" height="180"></a></p> <p>Opened out</p> <p><a href="http://lh6.ggpht.com/-H6wcKSy8DYk/VMPOJMD-0SI/AAAAAAAATeY/paWgGLXFyhk/s1600-h/open%252520frog%25255B3%25255D.jpg"><img title="open frog" style="border-top: 0px; border-right: 0px; border-bottom: 0px; border-left: 0px; display: inline" border="0" alt="open frog" src="http://lh3.ggpht.com/-u-Er8Hoo6ww/VMPOJ1LIRlI/AAAAAAAATec/_GH-HaSVd4c/open%252520frog_thumb%25255B1%25255D.jpg?imgmax=800" width="404" height="329"></a></p> <p>The frog print unfolded. </p> <p></p> <p></p> <p></p> <p></p> <p></p> <p></p> <p>It was a good exercise but it needs a bit more attention. The back of the print needs printing.It needs a fastener and you would have to keep the back of the print in mind when printing to make it acceptable but it’s a neat way to present a print…..if you don’t mind the print being folded!! </p> <p>These folded forms are very nice for presenting a small amount of information. Something I am thinking about. </p> sharp green pencilhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/03995814359038535193noreply@blogger.com2tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2058743330376740875.post-25694949209219490512015-01-18T07:39:00.001-08:002015-01-18T07:45:16.391-08:00Into 2015 with Eel Print TrialsMy first post to Print Daily 2015! I have spent a bit of time updating this blog with past prints. It’s useful for me to see how and if the work has developed. Apologies to anyone who subscribes to this neglected blog and received a deluge of posts .. hopefully it will all be a bit more regular from now on. I have given myself a pretty strict work regime…for now anyway<br />
<br />
I am playing with all sorts of printing methods at the moment and wanted to make a simple concertina book to practice a bit more simple bookbinding. I like eels. The story of their life cycle is amazing and worth a little book perhaps?<br />
<br />
But to start with some sketches and a first couple of print trials. <br />
<br />

<br />
Here are a couple of plates cut from card. I made a couple of card plates for the moon project but they were not terribly successful. Now I have made up some of my own shellac which I think will help. <br />

A first folded print… more experiments to come.sharp green pencilhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/03995814359038535193noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2058743330376740875.post-9647569968521286702014-12-21T07:17:00.000-08:002015-01-18T07:20:11.297-08:00The Turn of the Year.. and yes, more Moons.Today must be one of my very favourite days, because I know that tomorrow, albeit falteringly, it will start to get lighter. Hope, spring, warmth and sun cannot be far away. <br />
Meanwhile my first, fascinating, full-on, MA project is drawing to a close. Not so much about finishing things this one, more about cranking up the thinking processes. And for another two weeks I will remain deeply in thrall to the lovely Moon, lost in the wonder of its science, myths, facts, fallacies, hopes and dreams. There will be a last little sliver of a waning moon tonight before a new moon for Christmas.<br />
I have learnt enormous amounts of stuff; about book forms, monoprinting and the moon. I have made some strange images, played with many maquettes, knitted a Clanger, read some extraordinary fiction and finally worked on a set of monoprints which, in a way, relate the story of my research. I am now just assembling them into a rather haphazard book. The learning curves have been steep but the skills will be useful. <br />
So here, for the winter solstice, are a few of the monoprints. Out of over 60 plus I have to whittle it down to 29 ish. I will post the full set when I have made those tricky final decisions and also will explain a little about how and why I got there. <br />
I had only made a few monoprints before but loved the quality of the line see <a href="http://beautiful-beasts.blogspot.co.uk/2014/02/silk-road-horse-2-mono-prints.html">here</a><br />

Somehow they seem appropriate for Christmas.<em> </em><br />
I will, yes really, be back to the blogs with a bit more regularity in the New Year and I might just get one more post in before Christmas but, if not, a very Happy Christmas to all my faithful blog readers…sharp green pencilhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/03995814359038535193noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2058743330376740875.post-28745226177372372522014-11-03T07:06:00.000-08:002015-01-18T07:10:16.997-08:00Many MoonsI am just 3 weeks into the MA course and working on lots of ideas to do with the Moon's Phases. I cut some blocks to print all phases both singly and overprinted.<br />
They made some unexpectedly lovely prints:<br />
<br />
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEi7rHq-tVuIXTwP07qfB7mv6AiwDaDpvbUEuDQUBAvgwTq21wfUohTfIAhkOmkstlXWdvhmcY5_5_x7IWzS-PovVgDRlqeiKLJYIYpecmjxKenMfs_GgG5rR-ovT6pjHDpcaik0BiGJFego/s1600-h/moretrials3.jpg"><img alt="more trials" border="0" src="http://lh4.ggpht.com/-0QXxT6i27sU/VLvL8U7T00I/AAAAAAAATYQ/O4c1fPB_Sa0/moretrials_thumb1.jpg?imgmax=800" height="304" style="border-bottom-width: 0px; border-left-width: 0px; border-right-width: 0px; border-top-width: 0px; display: inline;" title="more trials" width="304" /></a><br />
<br />
It was a quick trial so only printed on newsprint, its sods law that they would come out so well. Maybe I will try on some Japanese paper later..maybe..sharp green pencilhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/03995814359038535193noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2058743330376740875.post-67114807217423780492014-10-29T07:00:00.000-07:002015-01-18T07:08:26.255-08:00Moon moth<br />I’ve been working on some prints of the moon lately and as moths are night creatures I have been wondering about combining the prints. I have no time for actual printing so this is a combined Photoshop print, colours I don’t think I could ever achieve in real life. <br />I tend not to use Photoshop much but as I am doing an Illustration course I think its time I really used it for the best it can do, which for me is combining images and playing with colours. So many ides and possibilities can emerge. <br />

<br />
<a href="http://lh3.ggpht.com/-Qw0Wb4YeENc/VLvJDwboV_I/AAAAAAAATXA/zuWv0T4B7v8/s1600-h/desk3.gif"><img alt="desk" border="0" src="http://lh5.ggpht.com/-KxoyX6Dpf2w/VLvJEqIvGSI/AAAAAAAATXI/yvoOUiZChoI/desk_thumb1.gif?imgmax=800" height="278" style="border-bottom-width: 0px; border-left-width: 0px; border-right-width: 0px; border-top-width: 0px; display: inline;" title="desk" width="354" /></a> <br />

<br />
Hmm.. nice possibilities. These are just proofs on newsprint which prints up really well! Better sometimes than the expensive paper. That’s just how it is sometimes ..sharp green pencilhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/03995814359038535193noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2058743330376740875.post-44319343612658114552014-10-17T06:50:00.000-07:002015-01-18T06:58:12.522-08:00Moth second plateAt last I have finished the cutting of the second plate. <br />
<br />
<a href="http://lh3.ggpht.com/-YZ8w5pq8N1Y/VLvH_4fEywI/AAAAAAAATVs/xRcj6SQk0o0/s1600-h/moth2ndplate3.jpg"><img alt="" border="0" src="http://lh4.ggpht.com/-BhksoCwd0Uo/VLvIANo06sI/AAAAAAAATV0/Io7sDd1EIPE/moth2ndplate_thumb1.jpg?imgmax=800" height="266" style="border-bottom-width: 0px; border-left-width: 0px; border-right-width: 0px; border-top-width: 0px; display: inline;" title="" width="354" /></a> <br />
<br />
The patterns are quite different from the first plate, as I want to overprint and see what happens.<br />
<br />
<a href="http://lh3.ggpht.com/-4MsEGef-PPU/VLvIA49onFI/AAAAAAAATV8/BpEvNVyBrzQ/s1600-h/moth2ndplate23.jpg"><img alt="" border="0" src="http://lh3.ggpht.com/-e7muq1_l4k4/VLvIBp79pzI/AAAAAAAATWE/1m9YTUDwuAU/moth2ndplate2_thumb1.jpg?imgmax=800" height="255" style="border-bottom-width: 0px; border-left-width: 0px; border-right-width: 0px; border-top-width: 0px; display: inline;" title="" width="354" /></a> <br />
<br />
I also cut a mask, using a test print from the first block. I can’t now remember why I I wanted to do this but I had written it down in my invaluable to-do book. <br />(Note to self: <em>Good idea to add reason or give self some clue or other.)</em>Anyway I hope I will remember when I start printing.<br />
Test print of number two plate<br />
<br />
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjRIxcT8ARsZoEeYH9U16DOmwkGYF_xkhmYDA1-40ai2hYqTavIcuJ0Sd1I-wril5_UMSic7Wtf7skhrWMJIrflFC4iqEZACd6425lGGfo15iy3uLe3y7vYrtn2TjvZ5Ax3STb871TEa00k/s1600-h/moth2platebg3.gif"><img alt="moth-2plate-bg" border="0" src="http://lh3.ggpht.com/-_BIn-RUjHuI/VLvIDO4rjzI/AAAAAAAATWQ/LG7rAb_eytc/moth2platebg_thumb1.gif?imgmax=800" height="376" style="border-bottom-width: 0px; border-left-width: 0px; border-right-width: 0px; border-top-width: 0px; display: inline;" title="moth-2plate-bg" width="354" /></a> .<br />
I was looking at the new plate and the cut-out print from plate one and thought how much I liked the isolated pink moth.<br />
<br />
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEird4MOF9cj409pLKp5G7HJ0f9IvmQbDFmaTJ1OXYJi7kdZoJLmLhcVClsVAV2tQ5yYtFTMSzglm0JtSeslwJL9Ao6jbpUSSshYYK5zlmgr0qaOXDn6TYyGUnKXRux742kZohxXnKYyqnjS/s1600-h/plates26.gif"><img alt="plates-2" border="0" src="http://lh4.ggpht.com/-3Moiu55D32c/VLvIEK3UQnI/AAAAAAAATWk/zzB7-wlBqH4/plates2_thumb2.gif?imgmax=800" height="188" style="border-bottom-width: 0px; border-left-width: 0px; border-right-width: 0px; border-top-width: 0px; display: inline;" title="plates-2" width="354" /></a> <br />
<br />
Some more possibilities are suggesting themselves.. sadly not the reason for the mask yet. <br />

This time another inspiring visit to a favourite city Amsterdam. Time is short this week so just a simple moth design to try a few print techniques. <br /><br />Some initial sketches to sort out a design that will be quick and versatile. <br />

A few further thoughts and starting to cut the base plate. <br />

Their results were excellent, some even managing two colours which is some going for just a few hours. <br />

<br />
A few stage one prints from the class. <br />
<strong>Chris the Frog</strong>I had printed up a few variations of the Frog as a demo using the same very basic materials we would be using in the class, a spoon, a baren, computer paper, tissue paper, some cheap Japanese rice paper and basic acrylic printing inks.<br />

In the garden there are still many tiny froglets around the pond fringes Mowing is a nightmare and very very slow. I have to carefully pat the grass to alert them and help the very tiniest ones to get to safety. The long grass must seem mountainous to them.. I rather know how they feel.<br />

There has been quite a lot of learning the hard way with this one. Patience is a virtue.<br />

It would be good practice. <br />

So far I have made a rough proof and scribbled on it a bit with white chalk to see what more I need to cut away. I made quite a few colour roughs but in the end decided it will just be black and white this time, like rook. <br />

It is so many years since I was last there and I had forgotten how rich and wide ranging is the scope of the museum. <br />I found many more wonderful beasts from all over the world, but the best of all was the small blue Egyptian hedgehog. <br />We do love our hedgehogs but I had no idea that the Egyptians revered them as symbols of regeneration.<br />
In the subdued lighting of the gallery the hedgehog has a certain mystery. The museum’s record, brightly lit and with its measuring scale and all the chips so evident is not quite so magical. <br />

After a bit of research I found quite a few other Egyptian Hedgehogs. Most surprising is the real and long eared Middle Eastern hedgehog. <br />

Leaving things unfinished is a bad habit of mine as I rush on to the next exciting thing.</p> <p>So, for this, it’s back to the adders.The old name was in fact a nadder but the “a” because attached. <br> I had got as far as some rough ideas a week ago.</p> <p><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgj3zQB5MTdl0TER5EL0WhT2Tb6EFn0bTyL-7_iv3xKBGYFP9qim1w417eImQC5bjY7QBj00sa-DC58U8EPDCOJSFHtEqKlUIiV__OYqdWB361CKk9NKMGR4P_3YNlD-CJVMPunY0cnjFyY/s1600-h/adders-2-bg%25255B3%25255D.gif"><img title="adders-2-bg" style="border-top: 0px; border-right: 0px; border-bottom: 0px; border-left: 0px; display: inline" border="0" alt="adders-2-bg" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgKAIFT_-5laPhuzbAGdZeLjZiSijYg3hJfUkjw91fN1ohT_Mqdg86AX1gkd7EvGIO5vcUdDUY1p734U0z2HlzdW24am8PsVdN9oBv5MyCXu-6l6WOhTSPbfORTW3MeMbx8-PNk0cHit5M-/?imgmax=800" width="354" height="236"></a></p> <p>And now I am just resolving one design. I’m working a little bit larger now and this one will be approx 11.75 x 9.5 inches. It needed some more working out and so I started with a rough and a tonal value sketch. I’ve reversed the image and redrawn the coils. </p> <p><a href="http://lh5.ggpht.com/-rsBJtpATGw4/UynKpdAWutI/AAAAAAAARK0/f3cN5mh21Ss/s1600-h/blackadderssketch3.gif"><img title="black-adders-sketch" style="border-left-width: 0px; border-right-width: 0px; border-bottom-width: 0px; display: inline; border-top-width: 0px" border="0" alt="black-adders-sketch" src="http://lh6.ggpht.com/-P066cCjg4Fs/UynKqMCw9wI/AAAAAAAARK8/aAlO7cCyuCo/blackadderssketch_thumb1.gif?imgmax=800" width="304" height="385"></a><em><br>Re draw from first rough.</em></p> <p><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiagTA2tKzPdspqiHj11ewwqargp4mwaPeHXvQ5JkP_hLDjAKN2rbLZ4xl3pv_17a-VZKz00nvXOPtiou7iggu1D77aDk_G4qWMxKGqb7uj2MMWM_0XADTXmgSnoP0AY5bCnu1i6as10yAw/s1600-h/addersrough4abg3.gif"><img title="adders-rough-4a-bg" style="border-left-width: 0px; border-right-width: 0px; border-bottom-width: 0px; display: inline; border-top-width: 0px" border="0" alt="adders-rough-4a-bg" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgT74y4yUgamT8y8TfR2rb8oY1UrDz3BD2f8vNn4XhmrBjrY3vKnOYs9FWGdISL4F9lYE16gPOjTkWYNixPdKrgxP8R29sI4MxXb6pBJfyFz3BOyTBpQgyu0NXqGBBcsMW77LAhMWg-YQZz/?imgmax=800" width="304" height="381"></a> <br><em>Tonal sketches for the adder lino.</em></p> <p><em><br></em>.<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiOU6XxJly3xAljAKHBH-I_Q7pZPvgVTnxdON0AE8Cwycm4XANr1-LAMRjAPJxmI8xk11ueWnpt2UjT-DEeq3bFxHZ33UeM1FHvVrcpLyVch5YJKMouRqThqQdFkATdE1SQ_FBKCvzkritr/s1600-h/colthumbs3.gif"><img title="col-thumbs" style="border-left-width: 0px; border-right-width: 0px; border-bottom-width: 0px; display: inline; border-top-width: 0px" border="0" alt="col-thumbs" src="http://lh5.ggpht.com/-uCXSrbdgPws/UynKtFbf6bI/AAAAAAAARLc/Xq1r-8i-4jg/colthumbs_thumb1.gif?imgmax=800" width="354" height="221"></a> </p> <p>Two colour ideas for 3 col reduction. It is, as Laura said, not a difficult process but it is a process, and requires you to work in a methodical set of steps, even before you get to the cutting. <br><br>My original idea was to look at the patterns of the grass, leaves and the snake’s markings but that had to be simplified for the workshop day. </p> <p><a href="http://lh3.ggpht.com/-2e8VrRiTRUw/UxoFz0O9w1I/AAAAAAAAQy4/LK_Ce-O4Y8Q/s1600-h/_bg3colbkgroud4.gif"><img title="_bg-3--col-bkgroud" style="border-left-width: 0px; border-right-width: 0px; border-bottom-width: 0px; display: inline; border-top-width: 0px" border="0" alt="_bg-3--col-bkgroud" src="http://lh6.ggpht.com/-vTqw0x1ulao/UxoF0t8hewI/AAAAAAAAQzA/i5qqhC2UA8o/_bg3colbkgroud_thumb2.gif?imgmax=800" width="154" height="261"></a> <br><em>Workshop day</em> <em>design with a shaded background. 3 plates</em> </p> <p>Now I can add another plate and try different colour combinations. <br>That is the joy of making separate plates and not doing a reduction. I now have 4 plates. One background, one snake, one snake pattern and one leaves.</p> <p><a href="http://lh3.ggpht.com/-RNKMJzV8GgE/UxoF1fNr3zI/AAAAAAAAQzI/bj_WvGmJqJ0/s1600-h/4thcolourblockbg3.gif"><img title="4th-colour-block-bg" style="border-left-width: 0px; border-right-width: 0px; border-bottom-width: 0px; display: inline; border-top-width: 0px" border="0" alt="4th-colour-block-bg" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiF_H9daA64C7Nd6GrR-CznAadREPM4JDh6umC2piiq_osJHO6uMaE9HyUfM6Jgwi17Rprv9UmkMxqBhWX_-82btLYKvjFru1upXNXkOayxk1ZZPSA3p5fO5pj7zRZGn3VjEgSilPVYhC0Z/?imgmax=800" width="354" height="316"></a></p> <p><em>My new woodblock plate with foliage. </em></p> <p><a href="http://lh4.ggpht.com/-A1ntLQCyxCM/UxoF23queSI/AAAAAAAAQzY/jjRdOBuBrOg/s1600-h/newplate4bg3.gif"><img title="new-plate-4-bg" style="border-left-width: 0px; border-right-width: 0px; border-bottom-width: 0px; display: inline; border-top-width: 0px" border="0" alt="new-plate-4-bg" src="http://lh4.ggpht.com/-kwkzlGQwgIY/UxoF36SWGWI/AAAAAAAAQzg/_LZ7TFR_cEU/newplate4bg_thumb1.gif?imgmax=800" width="229" height="384"></a> <a href="http://lh6.ggpht.com/-m5g9MHiHTiI/UxoF4oblA6I/AAAAAAAAQzo/xTKoJFxkd7I/s1600-h/newplatewithbkgroundbg4.gif"><img title="newplate-with-bkground-bg" style="border-left-width: 0px; border-right-width: 0px; border-bottom-width: 0px; display: inline; border-top-width: 0px" border="0" alt="newplate-with-bkground-bg" src="http://lh5.ggpht.com/-Mh9Cs0aZSi8/UxoF5dCtLKI/AAAAAAAAQzw/Levm-bqWDN0/newplatewithbkgroundbg_thumb2.gif?imgmax=800" width="226" height="384"></a> </p> <p><em>The new block proof. Working from a sketch again and again is like Chinese whispers and the image will change as you go. It’s so much better than going back to your original, unless you are looking for accuracy. Let the image and your marks develop in their own way.<br /><br /><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjh-PAKNncEWayTpTf36dU1ff99YVrmlfbpGKISOUiQwGvZJGECKhQvhg02FsD8VK2ENtdPwHn_zr5BUMinK7duuf6oAx8hJo4LeowW1TsmD8YSySeGgwx3vNqO1GDPoj67b_X7uZR1SUN8/s1600-h/redrawsmbg3.gif"><img alt="redraw-sm-bg" border="0" src="http://lh4.ggpht.com/-QIRrabOEwMQ/VLvPA4C5oRI/AAAAAAAATYk/8ODVzUuLhQw/redrawsmbg_thumb1.gif?imgmax=800" height="262" style="border-bottom-width: 0px; border-left-width: 0px; border-right-width: 0px; border-top-width: 0px; display: inline;" title="redraw-sm-bg" width="354" /></a> <br />

I think you need to do lots and lots of experiments and be prepared to throw away lots of paper. I have many rejects. Some are too dark, some too light, some get blotches in the wrong places etc etc, but the possibilities are endless. <br />

<br />
This image was printed twice, once wiping out some areas and then drawing on the plate again and running it through the press. It spreads the line in places which sometimes is wonderful and sometimes not. <br />

This image (I forgot to reverse the drawing :)…) was worked on both in line with a pen and roller on the plate, which is how the blobs of ink got there. All of the prints so far are with waterbased inks. <br />Things are all very experimental and endlessly surprising. <br />I really like them. sharp green pencilhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/03995814359038535193noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2058743330376740875.post-50291333112276683102014-02-20T10:07:00.001-08:002014-02-20T10:07:14.610-08:00First (ever) Japanese Woodcut!<p>Last week I had a one to one workshop with printmaker <a href="http://www.lauraboswell.co.uk/">Laura Boswell.</a> It was one of the very best workshops I have ever been to and was to say the least illuminating. </p> <p>Everything about this type of printmaking is different from anything I have done before. I had no idea of its complexities, the need for methodical work and the translucent beauty it is possible for even me on my first attempt to achieve. It is far too complex a process to go over in this post but it is mostly like a mix of watercolour and print, deceptively simple in some ways but with all the emphasis on the inking and sensitivity of your own touch. I cannot take much credit for this as it was made step by step under Laura’s careful guidance and I have to say a fair bit of cutting help from her too.</p> <p>I had chosen a image of an adder. It’s one of my Beautiful Beasts to come. I thought the pattern might be quite useful but not knowing anything about this kind of printmaking I went with a very simple scribble.</p> <p><a href="http://lh5.ggpht.com/-wr1tbxV0oGM/UwZEIvF8vTI/AAAAAAAAQi0/CQ1iY4ruva8/s1600-h/_bgadderthumb2.gif"><img title="_bg-adder-thumb" style="border-left-width: 0px; border-right-width: 0px; border-bottom-width: 0px; display: inline; border-top-width: 0px" border="0" alt="_bg-adder-thumb" src="http://lh3.ggpht.com/-CcPOzXm-76o/UwZEJY231QI/AAAAAAAAQi8/U4wLoqMautI/_bgadderthumb_thumb.gif?imgmax=800" width="200" height="244"></a> <a href="http://lh3.ggpht.com/-vcq-hEIe_Sk/UwZEKGTU9iI/AAAAAAAAQjE/wv9EfvJl2SE/s1600-h/bgaddthumb22.gif"><img title="bg-add-thumb-2" style="border-left-width: 0px; border-right-width: 0px; border-bottom-width: 0px; display: inline; border-top-width: 0px" border="0" alt="bg-add-thumb-2" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhTFquFzEhIkMULflMQRKv13C-H2I3DHNBxrRPMwjo7YvTr-qdLRJPnjvvg2dsgzKIkFlLFsFnDKtsNqpWWcYgzx902qVTi5jE2z1x-dhetcbvmibLP5vY7BU0XS5iII5biXddcjnBjta0R/?imgmax=800" width="188" height="244"></a> </p> <p>This had to be simplified again to make something achievable in just a few hours.</p> <p><a href="http://lh6.ggpht.com/-Q4UhOpEquZs/UwZELeVmEfI/AAAAAAAAQjU/PeBuHXoAUnc/s1600-h/_bgsimplifiedsketch3.gif"><img title="_bg-simplified-sketch-" style="border-left-width: 0px; border-right-width: 0px; border-bottom-width: 0px; display: inline; border-top-width: 0px" border="0" alt="_bg-simplified-sketch-" src="http://lh3.ggpht.com/-cZG86X4XVYU/UwZELwbFYGI/AAAAAAAAQjc/01o_x4W7MJQ/_bgsimplifiedsketch_thumb1.gif?imgmax=800" width="154" height="251"></a></p> <p>It’s not a quick process but, in short, you draw the image, transfer the image onto the blocks, cut, ink and print. I marked out the three plates and did some cutting to understand the process then Laura took over the donkey work while I tried the inking and printing. One plate for the background, one for the snake body and one for the pattern. </p> <p><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhAELKDV6QVSJ8CvjUdJzPaWmiCB2kfrHV8st1SvJhMd5ZSCc7skrNJv7QfeJPkywwa_Tviy-WdnJVBmJ3ZepVeOuvWpvuHU5aKSjbtCDp0b7krTUvcaHZ0dHqerldImTtHiDRZhBLHc2Qz/s1600-h/_bgwoodblocks6.gif"><img title="_bg-woodblocks" style="border-left-width: 0px; border-right-width: 0px; border-bottom-width: 0px; display: inline; border-top-width: 0px" border="0" alt="_bg-woodblocks" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhiDDs-eq-r3RSFyun1JxCBZaUhnQJVKP95NBrDOUn1uMEIg86SuZCjB_Y7WXUa0dGXodymvgJC_-G_97fxnqdTjhuL_PKsaVpZcN1i0Jg_WmwbujQhJfNPPfwsZ0WZAWc7cpaNyND94sOy/?imgmax=800" width="378" height="248"></a> </p> <p>Even with these few plates there are a million possible variations of colours, shading, mottling, blending and over printing, inking and printing again and again with slight variations to achieve what you hope to get. </p> <p><a href="http://lh3.ggpht.com/-EpB8VIE97Ec/UwZEOGvUwmI/AAAAAAAAQj0/3DnnL228_XA/s1600-h/bgshadedbackground4.gif"><img title="bg-shaded-background" style="border-left-width: 0px; border-right-width: 0px; border-bottom-width: 0px; display: inline; border-top-width: 0px" border="0" alt="bg-shaded-background" src="http://lh4.ggpht.com/-fgwVwk7whf8/UwZEOtMH33I/AAAAAAAAQj8/WtxiyL6FzyE/bgshadedbackground_thumb2.gif?imgmax=800" width="143" height="251"></a><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjAsri_vIA1RTvRwQiRUaxVEulNYt_hdqJZ-ECY_GokSgoWeXf1YOkVtgUvULIhap2fNq3eThVXwUVGQQEDpakPnsVTH4yYr5aEIQ9b1tPL_Dhyphenhyphen7eQuY4PSb66UhLS-JUCJ7Gij_nHKjbrX/s1600-h/bgmultibackground3.gif"><img title="bg-multi-background" style="border-left-width: 0px; border-right-width: 0px; border-bottom-width: 0px; display: inline; border-top-width: 0px" border="0" alt="bg-multi-background" src="http://lh6.ggpht.com/-tmbMEUheun0/UwZEQG7Do9I/AAAAAAAAQkM/oqcT_y-y72o/bgmultibackground_thumb1.gif?imgmax=800" width="144" height="251"></a><a href="http://lh4.ggpht.com/-9EX_e-Ln5s4/UwZEQ8C6gzI/AAAAAAAAQkU/2kDNGEBCDNg/s1600-h/_bgsimplebkbroundandsna3.gif"><img title="_bg-simple-bkbround-and-sna" style="border-left-width: 0px; border-right-width: 0px; border-bottom-width: 0px; display: inline; border-top-width: 0px" border="0" alt="_bg-simple-bkbround-and-sna" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhDokYipRKsb5vYJxecuuCr7eeeq_eWcbj99BnaI_wEsobu6g0k85gXt2EVGDSKRtw8QZkZoXOE4RgZwhD1TMpDw4hGD8B5Ovfy0DVPqu49XnE4R5JoxdvZUWD-QO0gXp_4hQyBUvui3H0C/?imgmax=800" width="148" height="251"></a></p> <p>These are background trials, shading, mottling and then with a simple unshaded snake and pattern.</p> <p><a href="http://lh6.ggpht.com/-e2fZxmyhtMY/UwZESE6LviI/AAAAAAAAQkk/He8DCC1nIJk/s1600-h/_bg3colbkgroud3.gif"><img title="_bg-3--col-bkgroud" style="border-left-width: 0px; border-right-width: 0px; border-bottom-width: 0px; display: inline; border-top-width: 0px" border="0" alt="_bg-3--col-bkgroud" src="http://lh4.ggpht.com/-jzrTVtv74BI/UwZES3By7QI/AAAAAAAAQks/ZqMaaq-9N8E/_bg3colbkgroud_thumb1.gif?imgmax=800" width="144" height="251"></a> <a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhZtstiOgC1F1P5KkZ5VZmfbP_oJPcptrZPpKWB_mxprVofebWf8H5-nUntijYp5RI-Wtbu1C2-tOwQ6HLza4hk_0p0qEBl1-DZ_hou4HvlZt_y_X1zOQNHT_A5_PrWXusjkBG_NGvgDzrn/s1600-h/_bgmottledbackgroundshad3.gif"><img title="_bg-mottled-background-shad" style="border-left-width: 0px; border-right-width: 0px; border-bottom-width: 0px; display: inline; border-top-width: 0px" border="0" alt="_bg-mottled-background-shad" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgWLM3PAWx7Tp5-lYY-4fuHNqGNpQOuUmhw0fAFH4PJ7AgMcgsacQuRqqp4_dUsSxNrMytCGUWboEhXw8DWyYxXBc46Fe3_P8z8kDec6AujSt8tFOo4MG7v0DleImDVbuwIYh0TgpH_U9Jq/?imgmax=800" width="144" height="251"></a> </p> <p></p> <p></p> <p></p> <p></p> <p></p> <p></p> <p></p> <p>These two have a slightly shaded snake with different backgrounds. <br><br>Having done this I do understand a little more about this beautiful form of printmaking. It’s the first time I have tried this technique and I am delighted by the sensitivity of the mark. There is a lithographic feeling about them, which to me is very beautiful. <br />
I have become really interested in the implied connection between the horse and the figure, so I’ll be working on that some more this week. sharp green pencilhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/03995814359038535193noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2058743330376740875.post-75213717369972495462014-01-31T11:39:00.001-08:002014-01-31T11:39:33.825-08:00Drypoint Trials with a Pig<p>I made another experimental drypoint on acetate, this time one of the pigs. </p> <p><a href="http://lh6.ggpht.com/-7hL7N8-aWvE/Uuv74NTOl2I/AAAAAAAAQLY/rhii9cHnRow/s1600-h/pigplate3.gif"><img title="pig-plate" style="border-left-width: 0px; border-right-width: 0px; border-bottom-width: 0px; display: inline; border-top-width: 0px" border="0" alt="pig-plate" src="http://lh4.ggpht.com/-aSGibQ2ADpk/Uuv74mxS7uI/AAAAAAAAQLg/Pzpgd0YdwxM/pigplate_thumb1.gif?imgmax=800" width="354" height="269"></a> <br><em>The thin acetate plate and the graver after inking</em></p> <p>I made 6 prints and each one was different. First try at an acetate Drypoint.<p>My first try at drypoint etching/engraving on plastic/acetate film. I am not talking about rigid perspex, just flexible acetate. I had not realised this was possible but my friend Sue has tried it and I was impressed. <br>In theory it’s easy, you just scratch into the surface of the plastic with something sharp, ink it up and print.<br><strong><br>The Sketch</strong><br>I am not quite finished with my exciting Grafham fossils and wanted to try this technique with some of them. Within 5 minutes, in amongst the shore line shingle, I had found a tiny piece of a <a href="http://pencilandleaf.blogspot.co.uk/2014/01/fairy-money-snake-stones-devils.html">Crinoid</a> Stem. On Sunday I had written about them over at <a href="http://pencilandleaf.blogspot.co.uk/">P&L</a> because I knew they could be found here but I was not really expecting to see one.
